Structure-borne sound is sound that propagates through a solid body. It contrasts with airborne sound and plays an important role in buildings. For example, the airborne sound from a loudly playing stereo system is converted into structure-borne sound within a wall. This structure-borne sound is not audible. However, this changes when it is converted back into airborne sound, for instance, when radiating from a wall – a process responsible for what is known as “impact sound”.
